About Chin Augmentation Procedure:
A weak chin or receding chins can have the condition improved with an implant (a special medical-grade material) that involves adding a synthetic prosthesis to the existing chin structure. It looks and feels like normal bone when it is in place. Some may require a surgical procedure in which the chin bone is moved forward to give them the desired appearance.
The principal is to create a pocket at the chin and place an implant into the pocket. The incision may be placed in the crease lines under the chin or in the mouth. The implant is slipped into place and the skin incision closed. Some patients need more extensive surgery to re-position the bone of the chin. The surgery takes about thirty minutes and may be performed under either local anesthesia (you are awake) or general anesthesia (you are asleep). You can choose. Most of the time this is an outpatient operation and a stay in the hospital is not needed. This operation can be combined with the removal of fat (submental lipectomy) which can eliminate a "turkey wattle" or a double chin.
The procedure may be used in conjunction with other procedures such as a facelift or facial liposuction which completes the desires of the patient to enhance their physical appearance. However, it is not unusual to combine this operation with a rhinoplasty to improve the facial profile.
Implants are not the only way to improve weak chins and cheeks. If your upper or lower jaw is too small or your teeth do not quite come together properly, more extensive surgery called "mandibular" or "maxillary advancement" is sometimes recommended. Your surgeon will let you know if you would be better served with one of these bigger operations, discuss their relative benefits and shortcomings, and, when appropriate, refer you to a reputable colleague in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for surgical planning.
