About Blepharoplasty Procedure:

An incision within the natural crease of the upper eyelids allows access to remove excess skin, muscle and underlying fatty tissue. Using an incision inside the lower eyelid, fat is removed or redistributed and muscle modified to correct a baggy lower eyelid.

An incision just below the lower lash line allows excess skin to be removed without noticeable scar.

Good Candidates are:
Men and women who do not have life-threatening conditions that can impair healing

Tell your doctor if you have: Eye diseases (such as glaucoma, dry eye or detached retina), overactive thyroid, Graves disease or Cardiovascular conditions (High blood pressure, heart diseases, diabetes)

During your consultations:

The success and safety of your eyelids surgery procedure depends very much on your thorough discussion with your surgeon. Be prepared to ask and discuss about your expectations, desired outcome, health history and lifestyle.

.....Be prepared to discuss:

  • Previous health history, drug allergies and previous medical treatments
  • Use of current medications, vitamins, herbal supplements, alcohol, tobacco and drugs
  • Previous surgeries

.....Your surgeon may:

  • Evaluate your general health status and any pre-existing health conditions or risk factors
  • Take photographs for your medical record
  • Discuss your options and recommend a course of treatment
  • Discuss likely outcomes of eyelid surgery and any risks or potential complications
  • Discuss the type of anesthesia that will be used

Prepare for the surgery:

.....Prior to surgery, you may be asked to:

  • Get lab testing or a medical evaluation
  • Take certain medications or adjust your current medications
  • Stop smoking well in advance of surgery
  • Avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements as they can increase bleeding

.....Special instructions you receive will cover:

  • What to do on the night before and the morning of surgery
  • The use of anesthesia during your procedure
  • Post-operative care and follow-up

You’ll need help: If your eyelids surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, be sure to arrange for someone to drive you to and from surgery.

Possible Risks and Complications:

Your plastic surgeon and/or staff will explain in detail the risks associated with surgery. You will be asked to sign consent forms to ensure that you fully understand the procedure you will undergo and any risks or potential complications.

Risks and risk rates vary from patient to patient depending on a range of factors. The risks listed below are possible risks associated with this type of surgery and are mentioned regardless of how remote the possibility

......Possible risks of eyelid surgery include:

  • Unfavorable scarring
  • Temporarily blurred or impaired vision
  • Dry eyes
  • Difficulty closing your eyes
  • Lid lag, a pulling down of the lower eyelid may occur and is often temporary
  • Ectropion, rolling of the eyelid outwards
  • Bleeding (hematoma)
  • Poor wound healing
  • Infection
  • Fluid accumulation
  • Blood clots
  • Numbness and other changes in skin sensation
  • Anesthesia risks
  • Eyelid disorders that involve abnormal position of the upper eyelids (eyelid ptosis), loose eyelid skin, or abnormal laxness of the lower eyelid (ectropion) can coexist with sagging forehead and eyebrow structures; brow lift surgery will not correct these disorders; additional surgery may be required
  • Pain, which may persist
  • Skin discoloration and swelling
  • Sutures may spontaneously surface through the skin, become visible or produce irritation that require removal
  • Deep vein thrombosis, cardiac and pulmonary complications
  • Possibility of revisional surgery
  • Loss of eyesight (extremely rare)

Surgery: time required 1/2- 1 hour

My Recovery:

The results of eyelid surgery will appear gradually as swelling and bruising subside to reveal a smooth, better-defined eyelid and surrounding region, and an alert and rejuvenated appearance.

.....Blepharoplasty Recovery time:

Bruising gone: 5-10 days
Swelling gone: 2-4 weeks
Reading : 2-3 days
Back to work: 7-10 days
Strenuous activity: 3 weeks
Final results may appear in 1-2 months. Incision lines will continue to refine and fade for 1 year.

Following your physician’s instructions is key to the success of your surgery . It is important that the surgical incisions are not subjected to excessive force, abrasion or motion during the time of healing.
